Whimsical Winter NC Wedding
Whimsical Winter NC Wedding.
Tell us about the proposal? The proposal happened in a small log cabin nestled in Smokey Mountain National Park. Tim and Katie made plans to spend the 4th of July holiday with Katie’s family for a week of hiking and fishing in Western North Carolina. They decided to drive up a day early to celebrate the 1-year anniversary of their first date with dinner at their favorite restaurant, the Square Root in Brevard. Little did Katie know that they would be celebrating something much more…
The day itself was quite stressful for Tim – his order of thirty freshly cut sunflowers fell through, and his plan to ask for Katie’s father’s blessing beforehand was nearly thwarted when their flight was delayed. Thankfully those details resolved themselves; but Katie only later knew why Tim, in his anxiety, seemed to be pushing all of her buttons that day! It was in many ways a comedy of errors – they got a speeding ticket on the drive to the restaurant and got lost in the fog of the Blue Ridge Parkway on the late-night drive back. They spent the 3-hour car ride reflecting on all of the phases of their relationship, and when they finally reached the cabin, Tim asked Katie to go into her bedroom and wait. After some time, he closed her eyes and walked her out to the hearth. When her eyes were opened, she saw rows of candles and sunflowers ablaze in the darkened room, with a basin and towel set up by the hearth. Tim told Katie to sit down at the edge of hearth, and he read Scripture passages from Song of Solomon and the gospel of John. He drew a parallel between Jesus’ gesture of washing his disciples’ feet and his conviction to model that same sacrificial servanthood to Katie in marriage. He prayed over them, said some other meaningful things that neither one of them remember, and washed Katie’s feet to symbolize the commitment he intended to make to her. Then, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She said “of course!” and they spent the remainder of the evening on the front porch hot tub talking, watching the stars, and listening to Yann Tiersen.
