It's Never Too Late to Marry - Durham, NC Wedding
It's Never Too Late to Marry - Durham, NC Wedding.
Carl and Julia tied the knot on May 5, 2017 at the Fearrington Barn in Durham, NC. What a beautiful wedding!
Carl and I got engaged in July of 2016 after dating for 3 years. He bought my ring right under my nose -- and I did not even realize. He held onto the ring for two months and called my 88 year old Dad for his blessing. Carl intended to propose at the restaurant we went to on our first date, but changed his mind when he realized how crowded the restaurant was and how close tables were, which would have prevented getting down on one knee. The next night, during the Democratic National Convention speeches, he surprised me by getting down on one knee and proposing. Evidently he'd been carrying the ring around in his pocket for a couple of weeks. We chose a wedding date (May 5, 2017) pretty quickly based on availability of a few key people!!
I visualized a wedding that was elegant, fun, and memorable -- and I did not want it to be like every other wedding I'd been to. Although I've been married before, I'd never done the whole wedding dress/bridesmaids/wedding thing and that was important to Carl and to me. My mother is deceased, but when she was alive, we loved to visit Fearrington when she would visit. Each time she came to town, we'd go to Fearrington for brunch and she would purchase a grapevine ball with lights from Dovecoat and would ship it to her home in Arkansas. Her entire yard was covered with lighted Fearrington grapevine balls hanging from the trees. Her yard was this huge, botanical garden like oasis that she'd created over the years. it was gorgeous. So I knew I wanted to incorporate these elements in the Fearrington Barn. My vision was to transform the barn into a garden at night with white lights, lots of greenery, and lots of peonies and hydrangea. I think it was truly a design success thanks to Cheryl-Anne and Mary, all of the vendors, and the entire Fearrington team! As a 59 year old bride, I knew that I wanted to take in every moment of the week before and the day of the wedding so that I could remember it and not have it fly by. I was very calm and - with Cheryl-Anne's help - there was no stone left unturned or glitch -- at least not that I saw! I also knew that I wanted a band, specifically Liquid Pleasure, and that turned out to be perfect as well! I asked you to do the photography because I'd loved a friends photos and you'd done her wedding as well.
Everything was magical. The Parlour at Mann's Chapel was perfect for our rehearsal dinner and having family and friends attend from all over the country was wonderful. As you know, Carl had blood cancer and a bone marrow transplant 18 months prior to our wedding, so we feel so grateful, fortunate, and blessed that the day was even possible. Although the budget sometimes crept higher than we originally planned, we finally decided that we had a lot to celebrate - love AND life - and every penny was worth it!
