How did you meet? As our officiants said in our ceremony, our relationship started like all great love stories – in the baggage claim of the Memphis airport. We worked together at Deloitte Consulting – Melissa based in Washington, DC and Adam in Detroit, Michigan – and were together working for a client in Memphis. Quickly travel became a big part of our lives as we grew closer despite a cross-country (or at least cross-Ohio/Pennsylvania) relationship. Our bond grew over the course of many weekend trips - to DC and Michigan, plus adventures like Iceland, Greece, Winnipeg, and Whistler. We both headed off to Australia for work projects and continued our time together sometimes from 14 time zones away and sometimes on the short Sydney-Melbourne hop. We finally settled into Evanston, Illinois for two years for Adam to attend graduate school, then return to build our home in Washington, DC.
How Adam proposed: The weekend after Melissa’s birthday in 2015, Adam shared several clues for activities as part of a birthday celebration. Saturday morning, Adam woke up Melissa early to follow up on one of the clues – to take a tour of the Smithsonian Castle, the original building of the Smithsonian Museum, one of Melissa’s favorite things about DC. Walking up to the Castle, which wasn’t open yet, Adam directed Melissa to have a seat on a bench –subtly bringing out a dish towel to wipe off the rain from the night before. He gave her two more clues – a picture of the Davey Poplar bench at UNC and the West Engineering Arch at the University of Michigan, both places that have local legends that the person you kiss there will be your future spouse. He then pointed out the they were sitting on a bench, under an arch and proposed. The rest of the day was spent celebrating with family and friends who joined us from across the country as an additional surprise.
Your envisionment for the wedding day: We wanted the day to be a celebration that truly represented us as a couple and to show the love to our friends and family. We selected the Fearrington because it was where Melissa celebrated her 21st birthday with her parents and sister. We tried to include small touches that were meaningful – photos of family weddings on the welcome table, our personalized cake topper, wraps for the ceremony in case guests got cold, luggage tags at the chairs for guest favors, programs that we designed ourselves, and flashing duck rings for the dance party. Afterwards, many people mentioned how much the day, in addition to being a great celebration, felt like us, which was so special. It will be an occasion we look back on for the rest of our lives as the perfect start to being Mr. and Mrs. Goldberg.
Highlight of your wedding day: The moment we turned around to look at the crowd at the end of our ceremony in the Fearrington Gardens – greeting our friends and family for the first time as husband and wife. Our wonderful friends, David and Danielle Rubin, had just concluded the perfect, completely personal ceremony with breaking the glass and sharing a kiss. We had people we love – siblings, friends, and our lovely dog, Lady Luck – next to us. We could see our parents, grandparents, family, and many friends who had travelled to be part of the celebration. It was the perfect moment to appreciate all the love we have for one another and that we felt from all those around us.
